section, the reality begins to sink in.....
Gone are the variety of job-listings, those positions that used to spill-over to the next page, possibly the one after, sadly, a thing of the past.
Suddenly, more and more the advertisements are aimed to 'work-from-home', but doing what?
Don't be fooled people! There's no such thing as 'get-rich-quick'.....especially if you see the words, mail-orders, immediately followed by absurd offers of income! You don't have to be a genius to know, anything that involves door-to-door canvassing; your PC & telephone, mail-orders etc etc..will not bring home the 'bacon'! Where have all the real jobs gone???

Imagine my absolute delight, when I saw someone asking for in-store help?! The ad stood out boldy, SHOP ASSISTANT-'Person required, 5 days per week, exp.essential! Enquiries: ########
Do I dare? You betcha! And in the face of a global recession, financial crisis, unemployment, high-cost of living, collapsed health-care, housing chaos, etc etc etc....I, have a job interview! The title may fall short of any magnificent or glamorous other, but a job, none the less!Just goes to show you, nothing, is impossible, not even when we think there's no 'hope'.....there's ALWAYS hope, when we have put all our cares, in God's hands.

Divas in the Hood

<a class="external" While they remained closely in my background, I stepped up a notch in the speed of things and took on a completely new aspect of life.
Here I was, a woman in her late forties and going through the ‘change’, now miles from all that was familiar shacked up in a cottage by the sea.
What on earth was I doing? What was I thinking? This was NOT on the agenda but I’d arrived none the less. While my brood chose to stay within the confides of the concrete jungle, I opted to take that great leap of faith and do the bolt!
An escape from the misery that had begun to nibble at my soul……the stress in life had already affected my thinking but I was damned if I’d let it consume what little of me was left.
Life-
A mortgage that had a habit of expanding rather than shrinking and monthly fees charged for the privilege of existing had finally worn me down. The constant influx of reminders mounting in my poor old letterbox, that phone that once stood out as a happy medium for friendly chit chats now my enemy and greatest fear! The ring tone enough to spark a riot even before any had picked up….and if you DID dare to answer, you often found you’d suddenly discovered there existed a whole variety of personalities within your vocal chords! Was that me? DAM I’m good! after succeeding to fool just one numb minded pencil pushing nag-
Face-to-face was tougher! The disguise a lot harder but still we tried.
Peering through a shrouded window while attempting to remain discreet almost hideous but curiosity always won-Any knock could mean far worse than a voice on a line! You just never knew and seriously didn’t WANT to.
Ah the seaside escape………

By Debbie Stevens ã 2007

Home

G'day and welcome to the website built for all my talented writer friends!
 WAGATALE
Is just one more space I have taken up on the growing internet! lol You really have to be quick to keep up-
Over the weeks, I am planning to expand the site so that it will also include places of interest to other writers/authors/poets~
For all serious writers & those wishing to seek ways of publishing, I am gathering up as much information as possible so that WAGATALE also guides the beginner down the RIGHT path! to get us started...

I recently joined up with a lovely female author who has given up all her time to assist writers-

As part of this, she often leaves tasks for folk to play with and I found them a great way to get the juices flowing for a sory, so with this in mind I have decided we could do the same here!

So, today's sample prompt is as follows.....

As Juicy as They Come Your spouse is addicted to mangoes—that slurping sound drives you wild and makes you want to kill.
 “THE LAST MANGO”

As always, the alarm went off right on time, while the young slim blonde struggled to come to her senses.
Another late night, and another restless sleep. How much longer? Lisaslapped Brett as she begrudgingly climbed out of her warm side of the bed. Never ceases to amaze me she muttered as she staggered blindly to their bathroom. As she fumbled for the bathroom light, she felt a cold squishy feeling under her foot. This woke her immediately! There, on her lovely new imported Persian rug, laid the remnants of another mango! Oh for God’s sake Brett! Lisa shouted, waking Brett from his dream, apparently one he was happy to continue on with….What?? Before he had a chance for a reply he was wearing it! Lisa argued with him over the mess it had made, screaming that if it wasn’t bad enough that he seemed to live on this fruit but NOW, it was on her lovely new rug! Full of apologies Brett walked over and scraped its remains before Lisa could say one more word. Yes, he loved his mangoes, but according to his lovely fiancée of 3 years, he had become quite obsessed with them. Yeah hon, you have first shower, I’ll get breakfast ready eh? he had hoped for a smile but got only a grunt as she shut the door behind her.
Their snazzy 2 bedroom apartment was settled in the nicest part of the city, not too close to the CBD but close enough that they could walk to if they needed. They had haggled with the real estate months earlier for the unit facing north. Their views were magnificent and on a good day, if smog was at a minimum they were able to see the top of the Sydney Tower. Lisa had placed their application amongst so many others, and never really expected they would be approved. This was their dream home! Of a night, after a long hard day in the office she would step onto the cedar timbered decking which went from the front of their bedroom, directly around to the living room where the balcony stopped. When developers bought the land, they invited all those of the local council constituents to view their final plans. The architect had designed 3 others around the area and Lisa’s position at work gave her the liberty of seeing these kind of plans first hand! For too long her position as head of sales in one of the finer boutiques in town had worn thin…it was time for a change so she shifted gear and reluctantly took a leap of faith with a job in her local council chambers.
This meant longer hours than she was use to but within the first year, Lisa had firmly planted a grand impression with her peers and was quickly promoted to Case Manager! The role was demanding but the money was well worth every extra late shift. The moment word got out of the town planner’s new ideas and designs, Lisa wanted a piece of the action. Both Brett and Lisa attended the meeting at their local library for the unveiling and Lisa noted each important detail of the lavish riverside block-They were magnificent and she was already visualising herself, propped up on an outdoor chair, umbrella shading her delicate peachy cream skin and sipping on a cool vodka/lime/lemon beverage whilst soaking up the view! Yes indeedy! she grinned
Brett’s eyes were on the recreational side of things…the gym, tennis court and the pool! Yep, to land yourself a unit here meant you were doing okay. As soon as the call came through at work of their successful application, both decided to celebrate.
Brett stopped by Lisa’s office block on his way home from his daily slog at the abattoirs, fresh from showering and full of smiles! Lisa rode the lift all the way down with the same cheesy grin and almost bounced out onto the pavement as the doors slid open. Where to? she asked him Brett had chosen a simple but rather cosmopolitan styled restaurant which offered a variety of delicacies from assorted countries.
As the pair entered through the swinging bar doors, they seated themselves over by the decorative pond, as close to the back as possible. The waitress took their orders for drinks before they strolled over to the buffet bar. What an assortment! You know what Brett, the salad bar looks wild, I might go for something from there! Their plates were soon choco block with everything from crab claws, calamari, prawns and fish cocktails…then came the salad! It took another 2 plates to bring all they’d desired, Lisa laughing as they struggled to balance their plates without dropping anything. Brett had gone more for the fruit this night, remarking repeatedly on the wonders of their mangoes! Lisa was becoming slightly agitated. Ok ok..so you like the mango, gees! she muttered under her breath.
Brett’s obvious delight to this fruit had suddenly become quite noticeable to other guests as he sucked and slurped his way through a mango dessert! Mmmmmm…oh Lisa hon you ought taste THIS! the juices dribbling down the side of his mouth which then appeared to form a river that poured off his chin! BRETT! Can you cut that disgusting noise out please???? People are staring at us! He had no sooner finished his platter that he was eyeballing the buffet once more.
Lisa sat with her bowl of fruit salad, stabbing her fork into each piece of pineapple as she watched him making his way back to the buffet. He went straight for the mangoes! Other customers were moving away in search of something else…something that, well, didn’t appear to be so messy?? The white linen table cloth which adorned Lisa’s table was turning into some kind of abstract piece of artwork and there was little room left to rest her hands without being soaked in mango juice! Again, Brett showed his pleasure and absolute delight for his new found love….he sucked, slurped, slobbered and almost spat mango as he tried to describe its wonder to his now violently wild eyed partner. You know what Brett? I am leaving! I cannot stand to sit here for another putrid round of your gross animal like behaviour! And she stood up, snatching her purse and made her way to the cashier counter. Realising he’d upset her, Brett was quick to follow her, copping plenty of sneers from others along the way. One lady actually snarled at him and made her own rude gesture back at him. That poor girl, the last words he heard.

That had caused quite a scene between them as they walked back to Brett’s car but he just couldn’t quite get what the problem was?
So, not to upset Lisa any further, he apologised and it was soon forgotten.
Until that morning she stepped in the squishy remains on her lovely brand new Persian rug! As Brett continued preparing their breakfast, Lisa was preparing for work. How’s it coming out there??? She shouted To her surprise, she came out to find he had set the outdoor table for them.
It was a beautiful day, the sun had only just pleasantly warmed the balcony and the air was crisp. A nice jug of freshly squeezed orange juice sat placed centre of the table, with two ceramic bowls and matching jug for the milk, fresh toast, butter and jam.
A serviette placed beneath Lisa’s cutlery, a chilled tumbler and an enticing bowl of fresh fruit. What more could anyone ask for to start their day?? What, no coffee? she joked…Brett then wheeled in the breakfast trolley which he’d carefully laid out 2 placemats, cups and saucers, a bowl of sugar and a fresh brewed pot of Lisa’s favourite blend of beans. Again, she smiled with admiration.
Lisa had just finished complimenting Brett on his fine service, when to her horror, he plucked a mango from the bottom of the fruit bowl! Lisa’s jaw dropped!
Not to have this gorgeous morning ruined, Lisa shook off her jitters and asked if Brett could pass her a slice of toast before it went cold. And then it happened.
With one loud slurp, he had taken his first bite of the mango, immediately turning her off breakfast and sending her into a complete spin!
Pushing herself away from the table, Lisa took one step back. That’s IT! You HAD to ruin the moment didn’t you?! Her eyes reflected flames of a fire that exploded out of nowhere, and yet seemed as though they must have been smouldering for sometime. Her absolute rage had spilled over onto the rest of what was to be a lovely breakfast and within the blink of a second, Lisa found the very mango Brett had been sucking on in her hand, forcing it further into his gob-smacked mouth! Is this what you want, huh, is it??? This is her story and although she wishes to remain anonymous, I am truly grateful to her for allowing me to share with the public. I refer to her as 'Jane' to protect her identity.
Jane was 29 when first diagnosed with Addison’s disease.
The year was 1986, somewhere around the month of March.
A single lady living your average life but when the sudden onset of the following symptoms began to cause concern, Jane knew there was something wrong and sought immediate help through her doctor.
Jane's s symptoms were as followed:
Feeling nauseated for no apparent reason
One of the tell tale signs were the inside of her mouth and palms of her hands had become very dark in colour, almost dirty to look at. This included the nipples.
Extreme constant craving for salt
Feeling weak/lethargic Upon her visit with her local G.P she thought he wasn't really listening to her until she showed him the inside of her mouth which caught him by surprise. In turn, he referred Jane onto a skin specialist who sent her for blood tests. As Jane vaguely recalls, the test involved the taking of blood samples over a couple of hours in order to check her electrolytes, this was then followed by a visit to the dental hospital in Sydney. Just a note to the reader:
When we reached this part of her journey, Jane made it clear to me that the events which occurred from this point onward were nothing short of humiliating- she became quite uncomfortable but wished to continue on. Jane arrived at the dental hospital and was immediately ushered into a room whereby she suddenly found herself confronted by a group of students. Jane was left feeling vulnerable to these strangers as they explored her like a guinea pig! At no point had anyone requested Jane's permission for this to happen and Jane certainly did not give it.
In any case whereby we are dealing with the community, there has always been a code of ethics placed in order to protect us, especially when dealing with those in the medical profession. We simply place all trust in doctors believing they are able to attend to our medical needs and we often do so without question. In this case the doctor in charge obviously paid little attention to this rule and to that of his patient. A sad reality which too often goes unsaid. Ethically and morally our lives are placed literally in their hands but unfortunately we the patient need to be alert to any sign of neglect as a measure of safeguard. In Jane's case, being thrown before these students felt somewhat like she had become the prey of these predators. The doctor allowed these people to poke and prod while Jane sat horrified. He stood by as each student followed orders to view the insides of her mouth not at all concerned that his patient may have been threatened by this ordeal. After approximately half an hour, Jane had to speak up and the only words she could let out were that of a request they place a paper bag over her head! This seemed to amuse them no end, many laughing at her remark.
Jane was quick to rise from her seat and made a speedy exit out of the room and the building. Returning to her skin specialist, the information she relayed did not impress this man who in turn sent her onto another doctor (endocrinologist) for further input. This doctor had come highly recommended but sadly lacked any bed side manners so Jane only managed a couple of further appointments. Has anyone noticed that with all this, Jane still had no idea of what was happening? Another reason to be vigilant with questions when seeking medical assistance. A trip back to her local GP, she explained in great detail all that had taken place and was quickly referred to another endocrinologist who thankfully for Jane, not only a local doctor but also a lovely person. "As a person, he has a good sense of humour and I found him so easy to relate with"- This doctor once appearing on an afternoon children's programme where he shared his love of archaeology. Jane built up a great rapport with his secretary who even though no longer works for him still remains in touch!
All her symptoms and background were there in his hands and he wasted no time with his diagnosis. It had taken three months to deliberate but now Jane could give this illness a name-Addison’s Disease. A discussion between patient/doctor sorting out all that would be required was dealt with in minutes! The disease would be treated with permanent medication which consisted of oral doses of cortisone, at the time; he placed her on the drug known as Cortate (possibly not still available on market) which was taken three times a day. Unfortunately, as with any new medication our body doesn't always tolerate and this was the case for Jane. Her doctor explained the reason being her body wasn't absorbing the medication so changed it for Hysone and within days, Jane noticed a change for the better. She continued to see this doctor for a few more years until her change in address required a change again in doctors.
In December of 1991, Jane suffered what is known as 'Addison’s Crisis' and was quickly hospitalised. Whilst there she was given doses of cortisone for the next couple of days and was released just in time to be with loved ones on Christmas Eve.
The practicing doctor at the hospital remains her specialist to this day and continues regular monitoring and other updates.
As Jane says, "It is something I need to be constantly aware of and there are times I can only describe some days as my battery has run flat. It doesn't happen often as I am vigilant with my medication but I have noticed taking the tablets later than the usual allocated time can cause extreme bouts of lethargy along with decreased blood pressure"
Just as she shared this Jane mentions doctor has her taking Prednisone now to control her blood pressure. Taking medication to control Addison’s Disease can consist of a variety of pharmaceutical tablets and may also need to be altered at some point in the patient's life if there appears to be any other associated problems. For Jane, her daily dose consists of Florinef (fludrocortisone Acetate) each morning and two doses of Prednisone daily.
This disease has altered Jane's way of life forever and she hopes that by sharing this information others will become aware of its existence.
Jane's amazing ability to continue life as normal whilst never knowing from one day to the next what to expect is nothing short of inspirational. "You just do what you have to do what you have to and simply go with these things." says Jane
I first met this lovely lady during a series of community health networking and we have remained friends since. I am grateful she has allowed to share these private and often very painful details with us as the message of awareness is an important one!
Addison’s disease has been around since the days of Thomas Addison, an English physician and founder of endocrinology, who because of a fascination in the changing colour of one's skin, went onto explain and describe the illness and consequently named after him. What is Addison’s disease?
It is an auto immune illness which lasts a lifetime
Symptoms can vary from person to person Long term affects for women-
Lose libido-married women require a testosterone patch which helps to boost energy levels (comes in pill form but do not necessarily work for everyone)
Kills off female hormones For both male/female- Perspiration-when sweating too much the patient must re-hydrate with fluids, and replace sodium with anything salty
Adrenal glands destroyed which then cause associated symptoms such as 'all the above' (varying from patient/patient) As mentioned previously, there are always associated risks/problems when taking medication especially long-term.
i.e.: Cortisone (steroids) can have the following side affects-
weight gain
fluid retention
increased appetite
steroids can often lead to osteoporosis & diabetes
in some cases medication has been known to bring on depression Unless diagnosed quickly, this disease CAN be fatal!
If a patient happens to suffer the 'Addison’s crisis' and cannot reach medical attention/help it can lead to death. For further information please visit these links:-
In Australia-
Addison’s disease Association Why on earth she allowed her husband to convince her this evening's lecture was really worth attending was beyond her.
These were not the most comfortable of seats and her mind was already racing ahead of the evening as she worried how long she'd be able to put up with them? Surprisingly there had been a good response to the Lecture's advertisement with many late arrivals now cramming in through the school hall's front doorway. Chafley College was known and appreciated for its recent renovations-The school gymnastic squad had finally made the National Championships so with help from the parents, the P&C and a few local sponsors, Chafley College had a complete overhaul! But tonight they'd opened the auditorium instead- Will you look at that? Sharon had noticed a couple of familiar faces a few rows back which now had her brain ticking. Wonder what Mike & Whitney Symonds feel they need from this? Robert had been chatting away with the young couple seated to his left and seemed to be in his realm, completely. Sharon had met Rob when on holiday up north with a group of family members- Thanks to the hotel's room service making an error with a bottle of French champagne, Robert and Sharon were introduced. The order meant for Robert's room had somehow found its way to Sharon's door. The hand of fate had been confused between room 329 and 326, and as the young Asian girl struggled to comprehend she had actually made a mistake, Sharon was quick to pick up on the problem. Accompanying the nervous room attendant Sharon was totally unprepared for what would happen next but it would always remain a special moment in time.
Wearing nothing but a towel around his waist, Robert greeted the pair who both wore an almost scary resemblance to each other. Mouths wide open with their eyes seemingly way too large for their sockets, the pair stood speechless before him. Finally locating a few words Sharon desperately sought composure while her little friend had a sudden attack of the giggles. Please excuse us but it would seem this belongs to you?? Sharon prying the bottle away from her little companion, who was clearly hypnotised! Time stood still. Sharon was caught right there, his gorgeous bright blue eyes penetrated her soul. He was in love! For Sharon, well she too had caught the same bug only for her; it didn't kick in quite so fast. He knew she would be a hard nut to crack but was relentless in his pursuits so by the time her 2 week vacation had ended, he had secured a phone number. They had been together ever since.
Robert had always wanted to explore his 'child within', to get some clarity as to why he was always yearning.....longing for something he felt he'd never been given. This to Sharon was silly. To even think it needed was such rot! Why do people persecute themselves to this nonsense- Then she turned to her hubby You know how long this thing actually goes for Robert?? she whispered hoping he'd see her reasoning...nope-
Yeh hon I think its somewhere from 7pm up until 11?? The newspapers had the evening event advertised with its schedule but failed to be accurate on time. I could have sworn I overheard a few people saying the venue went from 7.15pm - 10.30pm? They ALWAYS pick it on week nights, School nights! Their baby girl, Megan was being supervised while her mum and dad attended this 'special night' but would need to be up and ready for kindy the very next morning. Finally! The crowd had begun to clap as this odd little man slowly entered the room. Some actually stood in recognition to this man's apparent genius? Sharon needed more than that to entice her. A blonde, tall rather solid woman appeared shortly after, bearing a box of plastic A-4 sized folders. They were quickly handed around the group of people and then passed from row to row. Attached to each folder a pen and pencil, inside a set of sheets with a set of tasks. Barely anyone spoke...some made silly expressions and a couple of people got up and left?
The crowd were instructed to keep the folders closed until such time that they would be needed. Sharon fiddled constantly with the pen, praying the questions being tossed about the room would not land in her lap! And then...Okay lovely people...his smooth British accent easy to listen to. Inside the folders are a set of case studies. Examples if you will...His interpretations then went everywhere from the usual abstract of memories to the typical microscopic analysis of the family life and history. Sharon’s hands had become clammy, her stomach in knots. Rob, do we HAVE to??? And, as he so often would do in moments such as these, fobbed her off with his usual disconcerting frown. Honey, its all in good fun...relax. One of their tasks was that of closing their eyes and reflecting back to when they first recalled watching their favourite programme on television. Instructions were simple: Write the name of the programme, or the character which you most likely associated yourself to, and then proceed to describe 'how you felt'. Did you have any heroes and if yes, who were they and what impact did they have upon you? It took a few moments for her pen to move but when it began, it couldn't stop! There were so many memories, more than she had anticipated! The whole time thinking to herself how very clever the task-this guy had done his homework. The Englishman had given this group a space of time to finish the task and enough left over for the group to mingle and swap cases. A way to 'break the ice' whilst learning more. The big blonde quickly rounded up the folders once time was called, placing the pile on a nearby table. Voices became louder in conversation as each member of the room rattled off their cases to one another. Sharon found herself talking with the man on her right as Robert once more made pleasant 'chit chat' with the young couple. My clearest memory is of the cartoon Astro Boy, so I chose to zoom in on that time of my life. That alone was interesting and quite out of the ordinary for her, mainly as she hadn’t ever really thought about this particular time in her life, and now, here she was sharing her history with a complete stranger! They were great days! Sharon had started down a path that had many twists and turns, but sadly for the gentleman to her right, there seemed to be no end in sight? She just continued to share her life as a child, totally emancipated and loving every moment. She spoke of days down by the old river, 'skipping stones' with her buddies, her incredible collection of stamps which her Grandfather had helped her begin, her love for the local Milk bar where she would spend every second Saturday scoffing down a cool banana split topped with strawberry flavouring and how hot the milk was inside those bottles which sat in her school playground come first thing in the morning. You could hear the excitement mounting inside her voice box whilst she tripped over her own words. Did I mention I played JACKS??? Another story began....yes, Sharon had found her 'inner child' that night and as she and Robert headed home, more moments from the past continued to emerge. Well you sure got right into it Shaz! This being Rob’s endearing nickname for his darling wife. Yeh, it wasn’t that bad I guess, smiling up at him. Funny you know Rob; I had no idea of how many things I was capable of remembering??? Talking about it brought it all back…how did you go? In all that madness we never did get a chance to exchange stories…did it work? Do you think you managed to get anything out of tonight? But for Rob, it wasn’t what he’d hoped for…not as stimulating as it had apparently been for Sharon? It’s all good Shaz, at least you allowed yourself to explore something different by attending and I’m really pleased you came along. Now, how about we stop off and grab a bite to eat eh? It’s still not too late to call into Remo’s? This lovely little Italian restaurant had opened almost 12 months ago in their town, hoping to give the ‘golden arches’ a run for their money. Not to be outdone, they also added their own drive-through service operation which was indeed a success. Mmmm…yum okay Roberto, lead the way! The first young window attendant politely requested their orders then directed them to the next window. Hereyou are Sir, 1 Veal Scaloppine, 1 Spaghetti/Meatballs and your garlic bread. Once home, Sharon checked in on Megan who by now, was fast asleep…she thanked her sister-in-law for watching over her and gave her a brief run down of the evening’s events. Well guys its late and I’m sure you two are both tired so I’ll say goodnight…give you a call Sharon about lunch this week??? Rob let out a mighty loud yawn, stretched his arms and made a beeline towards their bedroom. Sharon on the other hand, was miles away in thought and had a real desire to dig up her past just a bit more! So, for the next few hours, Sharon delighted in digging through the many boxes stored away upstairs in their closet. Boxes that had not seen light of day since Sharon's mother had packed away almost 20 years prior. The collection of goodies had been a permanent fixture in the attic of the house Sharon had grown up in, holding everything from books, toys, photos and other odd and funny memorabilia which her mother had presented to her daughter after the family home had been sold. The dust may have settled for awhile but that night, as Robert sat watching his favourite cop show on TV and little Megan slept in her bed, Sharon sat upstairs reliving her childhood.....to her surprise and joy, Sharon was just as good at JACKS then, as now!! You might be able to take the child out of her past, but you can never remove the child from her past.

 Debbie Stevens ã 2006

Another 'prompt'!

Time for a review!

Over time we will spend some time reviewing books together-

'Captive Fear' by EG Parsons:
This book is a must read for those who love a real nail-biting thriller/mystery!
